Remixing the Day: Rocker Jeans, Bon Jovi, and Life’s Daily Gifts

When I was younger, one of my favorite songs was Bon Jovi's It's My Life. You know the one—full of that fist-pumping, live-on-your-own-terms swagger that makes you think you can conquer the world in a pair of leather pants. This morning, a remix popped up featuring Pitbull, and I had to play it. As the music kicked in, my 10-year-old son, with his trademark deadpan wit, listened for a few seconds and declared, “Oh, it's that rockstar from the olden days. Love that for me.

Love that for me.

Two thoughts hit me at once. First, my son now views my musical heroes as ancient artifacts. Second, maybe it's time to finally break out my rocker jeans again. I texted my wife to let her know: rocker jeans will never die. I'm waging a one-man battle to keep them in the closet (and possibly on my legs), so don't be surprised if you see me channeling my inner Bon Jovi this week.

But while I was joking about the jeans, the remix actually got me thinking. There's a lyric in the Pitbull version that says, “Every day is like Thanksgiving,” followed by, “It's my world, so get up and get it.” And it hit me—what if we really approached every day like it was Thanksgiving? Not just with gratitude (though that's a great start), but with the excitement of opening a brand-new gift?

Imagine this: every morning, there's a giant, shiny box by your bed. Inside is the opportunity to take a step closer to the life you've always wanted. Maybe it's the body you dream of, the career goals you've been chasing, or the relationships you want to strengthen. The catch is that the present doesn't come pre-assembled. It's not like opening an iPhone, all sleek and ready to go. It's more like unwrapping a LEGO set: it takes energy, focus, and a little bit of elbow grease to make it something incredible.

And here's where it gets funny. Think about the rocker jeans. When I was younger, they were cool. They represented freedom, rebellion, and confidence. Now, they're a little snugger, maybe a little out of fashion, but they still remind me of who I was—and who I can still be if I bring that same energy into my day. Those jeans are proof that we carry bits of our past forward with us, but they don't define us. What defines us is what we choose to do today.

Every sunrise is like those shiny jeans or a Pitbull remix: familiar, but with a twist. It's a chance to rock out and remix your own life. Whether you're starting a new project, doubling down on a goal, or just showing up with gratitude, the present—the literal present—is right in front of you. You just have to unwrap it.

So, let's approach this week with that Thanksgiving mindset. Let's be grateful for the chance to work, grow, and laugh at ourselves. Let's wear our proverbial rocker jeans—snug or not—with confidence. And most importantly, let's remind ourselves that every single day is a gift. Whether it's wrapped in sparkly paper or plain old tissue, it's still ours to shape.

Rock on, unwrap your day, and go get it.

With gratitude and a touch of swagger.
